Some of my favorite photographs are not the ones where everyone is looking at the camera with a perfect smile. Family photography in Northeast Ohio is about so much more than getting everyone to pose perfectly. Instead, I love the photographs that make you laugh—the ones that capture your children exactly as they are.
The ones where the children are completely absorbed in whatever strange, silly thing has caught their attention. Maybe nobody is posing. Perhaps everyone is distracted. And sometimes, the best photographs happen because no one is trying very hard to make a photograph happen at all.
Like three boys comparing their bellies and completely cracking themselves up.
It was silly. It was unexpected. And it was absolutely them.
That is exactly why I love it.
Family Photography in Northeast Ohio: Let Them Be Little
When families schedule photographs, there can be a lot of pressure to make sure everyone behaves perfectly. We imagine our children sitting still, smiling beautifully and looking at the camera on cue.
Real childhood, however, doesn’t look like that.
Children wiggle, run, make funny faces and get distracted. They whisper to their siblings, notice something interesting across the room and sometimes laugh at things that make absolutely no sense to the adults around them.
Those moments are not interruptions to a family photography session. They are the story.
As a family photographer in Northeast Ohio, I want children to have room to be themselves. That might mean capturing a beautiful portrait looking directly at the camera. On another occasion, it could be a child cuddled against Mom, a brother making his sister laugh, little feet running through the grass or three boys discovering that their bellies are apparently hilarious.
Those are the photographs that bring the memories rushing back.
The relationship is more important than the pose
Beautiful family photography isn’t simply about getting everyone into the right position. More importantly, it is about seeing the relationships between the people in the photograph.
I want to capture the way siblings naturally interact and the way a child reaches for a parent. I want the laughter that happens when someone says something unexpected. Those little expressions and gestures can tell us so much about who your children are right now.
Over time, those details will change.
Their voices will sound different. Their faces will mature. Their relationships with one another will continue to grow. The little things that seem ordinary today may become the very things you wish you could remember more clearly.
A photograph can hold onto one tiny piece of that season.
The Art of Remembering Childhood
One of the things I love most about photographing families is that I don’t want children to feel as though they have to become someone else for the camera.
They do not need to sit perfectly still or smile on command. There is no need to turn a family session into a test of cooperation.
Instead, we can make room for movement, curiosity, laughter and all the wonderfully unpredictable things that come with childhood.
When children are given that freedom, their personalities have a chance to shine through. A shy child may slowly warm up. A toddler may spend half the session exploring. Siblings may end up laughing at something completely unrelated to the photographs.
And those moments matter.
Because childhood is fleeting, I would much rather preserve an honest glimpse of who your child really is than create an image that looks perfect but doesn’t feel like them.
This is what I mean when I say your family can come exactly as you are
Years from now, you’ll remember the little things
One day, those three boys will be much bigger.
They won’t look the same. They may not remember why looking at their bellies was so funny. You probably won’t remember exactly what was said or what started the laughter in the first place.
Yet when you look at that photograph years from now, you will remember.
You’ll remember how little they were, their personalities, the way they were together.
Most importantly, you’ll remember that this was your family in this particular season of life.
That is what makes these photographs so meaningful to me.
