Why Newborn Photography Is About More Than Photos

About Author

When I was 18, I was given an old Minolta film camera, and photography quickly became a favorite hobby. As our family grew, I loved taking pictures of our three daughters, and now of all our grandchildren- We often look back on those images, remembering how small they all were.

A little late, but still worth saying… To the mom A little late, but still worth saying…

To the moms in the newborn stage,
the exhausted moms running on coffee and love,
the moms soaking in every fleeting moment…

To the moms still waiting,
the stepmoms,
the mother figures,
and the women carrying the memory of their angel children in their hearts 🤍

You are seen. You are valued. You are everything in all the ways that matter most.

Motherhood comes in so many forms, but the love behind it is always powerful.

Celebrating you — yesterday, today, and every day ✨
To every mom who has ever sat with their baby at 2 To every mom who has ever sat with their baby at 2am feeling like they're the only one in the world awake right now... this one's for you.

💫

There aren't words to describe how hard, beautiful, and lonely those early weeks can be. The exhaustion that lives deep in your bones. The moments where you wonder if you're doing it right.

.

Just when you feel like you've given every fiber of your being.. you find a way to keep going. Every single time. That kind of love doesn't need a caption. But it does deserve to be remembered.

.

Those early days, as hard as they are — are also some of the most fleeting.

The version of you that is doing all of this right now...
for the first time...
won't exist forever.

That's something worth capturing. 🤍
Mother’s Day is almost here, and while you’re busy Mother’s Day is almost here, and while you’re busy making the magic happen for everyone else, don’t forget this:

Your children don’t just want photos of the day.
They want photos with you in them.

The hugs, the messy kitchens, the bedtime snuggles, the laughter in the backyard, the way you look at them when they aren’t paying attention — those are the memories they’ll treasure forever.

So this weekend, hand someone else the phone. Step into the frame. Don’t wait until everything feels perfect. Your love is already the most beautiful part of the picture.

One day, these photos will mean everything — not just to you, but to your children too. 💛

Happy Mother’s Day to the moms who give so much every single day. You deserve to be remembered in the story you’re creating.

What I wish every soon-to-be-parent knew! Baby bo What I wish every soon-to-be-parent knew!

Baby bouncers, rockers, and loungers all have their place, especially when you need to safely set baby down for a few minutes to get something done.
But try to limit that to no more than 10–15 minutes at a stretch!

When babies spend extended time with their head resting against a surface, it puts consistent pressure on the same spot — and that's how flat head syndrome develops. It's far more common than most parents realize, and in many cases, it's preventable with simple awareness.

I’d love to hear this… 🤍 What was an unexpected o I’d love to hear this… 🤍

What was an unexpected or emotional moment for you when you first became a parent?

Not the milestones everyone talks about—
not the “first steps” or the things the books prepare you for…

But the moment that caught you off guard.

The one no one warned you about.
The one that made your heart feel something entirely new.

Maybe it was the first time they settled in your arms…
The first quiet moment when it all felt real…
Or the realization that your heart would never quite belong only to you again.

Those are the moments that stay with us.

There is nothing quite like the beginning… The mo There is nothing quite like the beginning…

The moment you become a family.
The moment everything shifts—quietly, completely, forever.

Your first baby. Your first girl.
The first time you hold her and realize your world will never be the same.

And in it all, there is something deeper—
the path that led you here, the story written long before this moment…
God’s plan for your family, unfolding in His perfect timing.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” — Proverbs 3:5–6

Even when the journey didn’t look the way you expected…
He was guiding you here all along.

If you’re in this beautiful season of new beginnings, I would be honored to document it for you 🤍

People ask me all the time if I have children.. I People ask me all the time if I have children..
In the clinic and in the studio.

And I think what they're really asking is: "do you understand?"
Yes. More than I could ever put into words. ❤️

My husband and I are proud parents and grandparents. Every summer, our home becomes what the grandkids have named "Camp Thompson" — swimming, bonfires, backyard barbecues, and the kind of blissful chaos that only happens when everyone you love is under one roof.

It's not lost on me that the newborn I'm holding in this photo will be walking around the yard next summer, and running the year after. That's just how fast time goes.

These moments? They are exactly why I do this work. Because I know firsthand what it means to blink and find yourself in a different season entirely.

.
If you're expecting and thinking about capturing this time with your family, I'd be honored to help.

Do you have something sentimental you’d include in Do you have something sentimental you’d include in your newborn session?

One of the most meaningful ways to personalize your session is by incorporating pieces that already hold a place in your heart.

A crocheted hat from grandma…
a handmade quilt…
your own baby blanket…
or even something from your wedding day.

These little details turn your photos into more than just images—they become part of your family’s story.

Years from now, it won’t just be about how tiny they were…
it will be about the love and memories wrapped around them, too 🤍

If you’re planning a session, I’d love to help you weave those meaningful touches into something you’ll treasure forever.

If you're expecting, save this. 🤍 Over the next f If you're expecting, save this. 🤍

Over the next few weeks, I'm sharing 3 pieces of advice I give to nearly every family I work with.. things that are simple, research-backed, and make a real difference in those early months.

A little context: I spent my career as a Board-Certified Doctor of Physical Therapy specializing in pediatrics. I'm also a newborn photographer, Mom, and now Grandma to an amazing crew. I share this info not because I have all the answers, but because I've seen firsthand how much these small habits matter.

Motherhood has never stayed the same… and that’s b Motherhood has never stayed the same… and that’s both the beauty of it, and the ache.

In the beginning, it was all-consuming.
Tiny hands, sleepless nights, the constant rhythm of being needed for everything.
It was exhausting… and sacred in a way I didn’t fully understand at the time.

Then slowly, things began to change.

Little hands grew bigger.
Dependence turned into independence.
The days felt long—but the years moved quietly, steadily forward.

And now… I find myself in a new season.
Grandmother.

A role that feels softer, slower, and somehow just as full of love—
but different.

I get to hold babies again… but not as tightly.
I get to love deeply… but with open hands.

But now…
they call when they have questions about their child.
They reach out when their little one is struggling.
And I find myself rocking my child’s child.

And if I’m honest, there are parts of motherhood I still grieve.

The last time I rocked my own baby without knowing it was the last.
The way they used to reach for me first.
The version of me that was everything to them in those early days.

Motherhood doesn’t end—it transforms.

It stretches your heart in new ways, asks you to let go, and invites you to love without holding on so tightly.

It is beautiful.

Whether you’re holding your newborn for the very first time…
or watching your children raise babies of their own…

the connection, the core remains.

It’s a thread that ties us together—across seasons, across generations…
a shared experience that is both deeply personal and beautifully universal.

And in all its forms…
it changes you in the most meaningful way 🤍
Winnie the Pooh had it right when he said, “Someti Winnie the Pooh had it right when he said,
“Sometimes the littlest things take up the most room in your heart.” 🍯

And isn’t that exactly what this season feels like…

Tiny fingers wrapped around yours.
Soft breaths against your chest.
A love so big it changes everything.

This sweet girl, Sunnie—so perfectly named for the warmth of the season and the love her parents have for her—radiates that kind of light in the most gentle, beautiful way.

These are the days you’ll want to remember forever.

If you’re in this season, I would love to help you hold onto it—just a little longer.

There’s something especially beautiful about a gro There’s something especially beautiful about a growing family…

Not just the anticipation of a new baby, but the quiet (and sometimes not-so-quiet) excitement of an older sibling stepping into a brand new role 🤍

The curiosity.
The joy.
The way they gently hold onto mama, already sensing that everything is about to change.

It’s such a tender in-between season—where they are still your baby, and already becoming something more.

These moments matter just as much as the newborn days.
Because this is where the story begins… for them, too.

If your due date falls between June and August, th If your due date falls between June and August, this is your gentle reminder to reach out before the window closes 🤍

Here's why timing matters more than most parents realize:
The ideal age for newborn photography is 5–14 days old. Babies are sleepier, more flexible, and easier to settle in those first two weeks. After that, the window shifts quickly.
Which means your session needs to be already booked before your baby arrives — not after.

I keep my calendar intentionally small so that every family I work with gets my full attention. That means I can only take a limited number of sessions each month in order to serve you to the best of my ability. Summer dates are nearly full.

If you're expecting this summer and have been thinking about a newborn session, now is the time to reach out!
