Every step on grass, carpet, ramps and play equipment sends rich sensory input through the soles of the feet. That helps your child learn balance, adjust his posture on soft or sloped surfaces, and understand where his body is in space. Watch how his feet grip and curve to the surface as he climbs! 🧗 👟 Save shoes for protection, like hot pavement, cold weather or rough or sharp ground. When he does wear them, choose soft, flexible soles that bend easily, with a wide toe box and no raised heel. 💛 Most kids benefit from barefoot time. This time of year makes it easy to slow down and actually be in the moment with your people — even if it's just for an afternoon at the patch. We got some beautiful posed shots this session, the kind where everyone's looking at the camera and it all comes together just right. But some of my favorite images aren't those. They're the in-between giggles, the pile-on hugs, the moment right after I said something ridiculous just to get both boys looking the same direction for two seconds. This is what I love most about family sessions: whether we're carefully composing a shot or just letting the room do its thing, it's all part of the same story. **A few newborn photography myths I hear pretty of **A few newborn photography myths I hear pretty often… 🤎** **Myth:** Babies need to be sedated or somehow “tricked” into sleeping deeply for posed photos. **Truth:** A full belly, a warm and comfortable environment, white noise, and a whole lot of patience can go a long way. There’s no need for anything else. **Myth:** If your baby is awake, you’ve missed the window and the session is ruined. **Truth:** Awake babies can give us some of the sweetest images. Those wide-open eyes, little expressions, and glimpses of their personality are all part of who they are right now. We can simply adjust the session to follow your baby’s cues. **Myth:** Newborn posing is dangerous. **Truth:** Newborn posing requires proper training, experience, and a strong understanding of safe positioning and handling. Your baby's comfort and safety always come first. I actually spent many years working as a pediatric physical therapist, so newborn safety is something I take very seriously. I’ve shared more about safe newborn posing in a previous post, and I’m always happy to point you toward it if you’d like to read more. **Myth:** You need a nursery full of props and a Pinterest-perfect setup for beautiful newborn photos. **Truth:** Some of my favorite images are often the simplest ones—a baby in a bassinet, beautiful natural light, tiny details, and that little face you already love so much. There is a lot of information out there about newborn photography, and not all of it is accurate. My goal is simply to help parents know what to expect, feel comfortable asking questions, and choose a photographer they trust. Because when you know what goes into a session, it’s a lot easier to relax and enjoy it. 🤎

I’m choosing fabrics, looking through my newborn closet for the outfits that will photograph beautifully, and pulling together colors and textures that feel right for your baby and your family. The beanbag is prepared for those classic newborn portraits, and I’m choosing the little details and props to complement the look we’ve planned together. For this session, I’m working with warm, earthy fall colors and cozy textures. I love putting all of these pieces together and seeing how they come together to create something beautiful without taking attention away from your baby. 🍂 I’m also preparing the family and sibling area, because I want those images to feel just as intentional. Your baby may be the reason we’re here, but the photographs of everyone together will become some of the most meaningful images you have. There’s a lot of thought that goes into what happens before you arrive. I do that because when you walk into my studio, I want you to be able to relax and know that I’ve taken care of the details. Strong hands, softest grip — hard-working hands bu Strong hands, softest grip — hard-working hands built for rough, heavy things, now holding something as fragile as she is. That's the part of newborn sessions that gets me every time. Not the tiny fingers or the flowers in her hair, but watching those hands hold something so small so gently. I didn't have to ask for that expression on his face — I just had to point the camera at it before it passed. That's his daughter. And his hands already know exactly how to hold her.

My best tip: shop your own closets first before buying anything new. Rich, warm neutrals (rust, olive, cream, denim) photograph beautifully against fall backdrops and almost everyone already owns something in that palette. Avoid busy patterns and stark white sneakers if you can — they tend to pull the eye away from faces. Beyond that, comfort wins. A family that's comfortable looks like a happy family. This week I got to photograph a "berry" first birt This week I got to photograph a "berry" first birthday cake smash for the sweetest little girl — and her newborn baby brother made a special guest appearance too. Here's the sweet backstory: with a brand new baby at home, big sister hadn't been able to make it to his newborn session. So when her cake smash rolled around, I asked if he could come along too — because getting the two of them together while he's still this tiny was too good to pass up. A cake smash on its own is already pure joy (equal parts messy and adorable). Add her baby brother into the frame, and it becomes something more — a real snapshot of exactly who this family is right now, at this exact stage. If you've got a new baby and an older sibling's milestone landing close together, let's talk about capturing them side by side while they're still this small.

Some of the most meaningful work I've done has been through remembrance photography — sitting with families in the NICU or in hospital rooms during their hardest days, giving them images to hold forever. My clinical background makes this work possible in a way I couldn't have done otherwise — it's quiet, sacred work, and it's changed how I show up for every single family I photograph, in the best and hardest moments alike. I don't share those sessions publicly, out of respect for the families. But I wanted you to know this work exists, and that if you or someone you love is walking through a loss like this, you are not alone, and some photographers will show up for you. Session Spotlight: big sister was not sure about t Session Spotlight: big sister was not sure about this whole "new baby" thing. She crossed her arms for the first ten minutes. Refused to sit close. And then — slowly, on her own timeline, not ours — she reached out and touched her baby brother's hand. Her mom cried behind me. I nearly did too. This is the fear I hear from so many parents expecting a second: "What if my oldest feels replaced?" It's a real and valid worry. But I've watched dozens of these moments unfold, and I promise — it clicks. Maybe not on your timeline, but it clicks.
