safety matters
Choosing a newborn photographer is about so much more than beautiful images — it’s about trusting someone with your baby’s safety, comfort, and care during one of the most delicate stages of life.
As a Cleveland, Ohio newborn and family photographer with decades of experience working with infants and children in the medical field as a pediatric physical therapist, safety in newborn photography is at the center of every session I provide. From gentle posing and developmental awareness to safe handling techniques and carefully supported setups, every image is created with your baby’s well-being as the highest priority.
One of the most important parts of newborn photography is something many families never fully see in the final image: safety.
Those peaceful, curled-up newborn portraits parents treasure forever should always begin with a baby who is comfortable, supported, protected, and carefully observed throughout the entire session. Beautiful images are important, of course — but they are never more important than the well-being of the tiny baby being photographed.
My background in pediatric physical therapy gave me not only extensive knowledge of infant development and positioning, but also a deep respect for how delicate newborns truly are. Newborns cannot support themselves. Their muscle control is immature, their reflexes are unpredictable, and their comfort cues can be incredibly subtle. Even the gentlest pose requires careful attention to positioning, circulation, temperature, breathing, and support.
What may appear effortless in a finished image is often the result of constant observation, preparation, patience, and skilled hands working quietly behind the scenes.

That is why having a spotter during newborn sessions is so incredibly important.
A spotter’s role is much more than simply “helping.” A skilled assistant becomes an extra set of eyes and hands dedicated entirely to the baby’s safety and comfort throughout the session. Sometimes that means gently supporting a newborn’s head or body during a pose. Sometimes it means staying only inches away from the baby while an image is captured. Other times it means noticing tiny details that may need adjustment — a finger tucked awkwardly, a blanket too close to baby’s face, or subtle signs that a baby may simply need a break.
In many of the before-and-after images I share, families will see hands carefully supporting a newborn during the setup of a pose. Those hands are not interrupting the process — they are an essential part of it.
The finished image may look seamless and effortless, but the process behind it is intentionally cautious, slow, and baby-led. Many poses seen online are actually composite images, meaning multiple photographs are safely blended together in editing rather than expecting a baby to independently maintain a position unsupported. Safety should always come before achieving a particular pose.
Beyond newborn safety, having a trusted spotter becomes especially valuable during sibling and family portraits as well.
guiding toddlers
Toddlers are wonderfully unpredictable. They are curious, energetic, emotional, and beautifully busy little people. During family sessions, an assistant can help gently redirect a toddler, encourage natural interaction through play, or simply stand close enough to ensure everyone remains safe and relaxed while genuine moments unfold naturally.
In my own sessions, I am incredibly blessed to now have my daughter working alongside me.
Not only does she deeply love children, but she also brings her own professional experience working with children in the medical field into every session. Watching her interact with families is one of my greatest joys. She understands how to read children’s cues, move calmly and gently around newborns, and create a comforting presence for toddlers who may feel shy, overstimulated, or uncertain.
Together, we function as a team with one shared priority: creating beautiful images while protecting and caring for the children entrusted to us.
There is something especially meaningful about working alongside someone who shares both your love for children and your understanding of their developmental needs. While I focus on lighting, composition, posing, and connection, she is often quietly ensuring tiny hands are safely positioned, a baby remains fully supported, or a toddler stays engaged and happy. Many of the images families treasure most were only possible because of her gentle guidance and watchful presence just outside the frame.
Parents often see the final gallery — the sleepy newborn curled peacefully on soft fabrics, siblings laughing together, a toddler kissing baby’s forehead, or a family wrapped together in love.
What they may not always see is the teamwork behind those moments:
the spotter inches away from the baby,
the supporting hand edited carefully out later,
the constant attention to comfort and positioning,
the feeding breaks,
the soothing,
the patience required to let children simply be children.
And honestly, that invisible work matters just as much as the finished image itself.
Because newborn photography should never prioritize perfection over safety.
The goal is not to force babies into uncomfortable positions or expect toddlers to behave perfectly. The goal is to create an environment where children feel secure, supported, and loved — and from that place, authentic and timeless images naturally emerge.
Some of my favorite photographs are not technically “perfect” at all. They are the images where a baby stretches unexpectedly, a toddler bursts into laughter, or a parent instinctively comforts their child. Those moments tell the truth of a family’s love story far better than perfection ever could.

At the heart of everything I do is the understanding that these tiny days pass quickly. Families are trusting me not only to create beautiful artwork, but also to care for their children with gentleness, patience, knowledge, and respect.
That trust is never something I take lightly.
If you are searching for a Cleveland newborn photographer, Northeast Ohio newborn photographer, or a family photographer experienced in safe newborn posing, infant handling, and child-centered photography, I would be honored to help preserve these fleeting moments for your family.
